If you are familiar with the town of Chester-le-Street in County Durham and have read, “A Monstrous Carbuncle”, you might have guessed that Witton-le-Cone is based on it. Below are a few pictures of the town, which will be added to later.
A very pleasing wall which used to have an Aldi supermarket and flats on one side and, previously, the civic centre, built in 1982 and demolished in 2014. Now part of the Titas College development, the wall also had to be demolished.
Gate to the Witton-le-Cone allotments on Picktree Lane. Also flattened to make way for Titas.
Front view of the site on Newcastle Road after demolition of the civic centre building, but (obviously) before Titas college was built!
Witton parish church over the car park used formerly to serve the civic centre. Health Centre is in the foreground to the right.
The River Cone (That really was its name!) in Witton market place with the Witton-le-Cone viaduct in the background.
